Shadows of Past Things

Shadows swarm about me
Though they are not of my own device
Why does the darkness seek me?
When I am nothing but kind?

And if I am so wrong
Then why are you so right
You live on in the night
While I am the one to go and sleep alone

And if I did those things
And if mercy always sings
Then why am I alone tonight
While you dance in people’s hearts?

Rivers flow around me
Going on their own ways
And I can’t help but think of you
And of what you would say

And if I am undeserving
Why do you act in such a way
That is harsh and cold on the soul
And leaves me with a hole

Clouds soar above me
And I look at them going by
I still think of how you left me
And wouldn’t care if I cried.
